Angel Olsen - "White Fire"
Angel Olsen's second album 'Burn Your Fire For No Witness' has just been released and it is another example of heartbreak and sadness resulting in a creative high. I don't need to name any, but there are so many singer songwriters who have peaked while in a state of despair. It is not so much a breakup album but some pain is expressed in the lyrics and delivery. Angel Olsen was originally part of Bonnie "Prince" Billy's backing band, so we can all agree that uplifting love songs were never the order of the day. However, in saying that, there are a few louder tracks to counter the quiet tones on 'Burn Your Fire For No Witness.' The track "White Fire" reminded me of someone so much that it made that artist seem even less bleak. You will know who I'm talking about as soon as you hear the opening notes. Spoiler Alert! If Leonard Cohen was from America, was actually female and born a couple of generations later, this is exactly what you would expect to hear.

Erlend Øye - "La Prima Estate"
Erlend Øye is a musician from Norway. A founding member of Kings of Convenience and also a member of The Whitest Boy Alive - on top of solo recordings. "La Prima Estate" is a single from 2012, which was recorded while he was living in Italy. He has embraced Italian life with a song that takes plenty of inspiration from the Italian pop of the 70s. Perfect for our summer here on the other side of the world.

Shihad - "Bitter"
"Bitter" is classic Shihad from their second album 'Killjoy' released in 1995. They were the best live band in New Zealand during the 90's and also the local 'Big Day Out' favourites for many years. Did I name Bitter FM after this song? The answer is actually no, but it would've made a lot of sense.

Arcade Fire - Porno
It's obvious that Arcade Fire's latest album 'Reflektor' hasn't had the same impact as the previous album 'The Suburbs' did. Although, it is completely subjective, so it doesn't mean it is inferior or even necessarily better.... given that it is a move into new territory. A double album, 'Reflektor' does need a bit of time to absorb and your perseverance is definitely rewarded. "Porno" is the current favourite and it has been added to playlists on Bitter FM. If you love the song as much as I do, here is your chance to tell everyone that you are really into "Porno"......
