Death Cab For Cutie - "The New Year"

Here is a song for the new year. I would add more.... if I was up for it. Happy new year everybody.

Romeo Void - "Never Say Never"

'Romeo Void' could easily fit in the 'one hit wonder' category, one would think, because most people would remember them for the classic new wave song "Never Say Never" released in 1982. But they actually had another single "A Girl in Trouble (Is a Temporary Thing)" that was their biggest selling song. However, we will leave that one for another day. "Never Say Never" is the song I remember them by. The lead singer Debora Lyall sang her lyrics with oodles of sexual energy... over the top of a post-punk/disco beat. They signed with Columbia Records not long after this. But they were dropped after just two albums, reportedly, because of Debora Lyall's weight. That raises a question... has anything changed? I personally think the world has changed for the better, since then.

The Lemonheads - "If I Could Talk, I'd Tell You"

The Lemonheads released "If I Could Talk, I'd Tell You" as one of three singles from their 1996 album 'Car Button Cloth.' "If I Could Talk I'd Tell You" was co-written with Vaselines leader Eugene Kelly. I love the opening line... "Half past 9, quarter to ten, 10:15, and we're coming around again" not because of anything deep and meaningful, more the drugged-out slacker tone of it... and also because it is about the only line that is comprehensible.

(Lyrics)

[verse1]
Half past 9, quarter to ten
10:15, and we're coming around again
hold off, are we going soft?
Flushed my Zoloft, and we're comin' around again
Found out, and i almost drowned
Walked back down, and we're coming around again

[Chorus:]
If I could talk I'd tell you
If I could smile I'd let you know
You are far and away
My most imaginary friend

[Repeat Chorus]
Khmer Rhouge, and genocide qua
Your place or mein kempf, now i'm givin' the dog a bone
slight hunch, without the vaguest clue
to keep the blood balanced, now we're coming around again
half past 9, quarter two,
10:15, and we're comin' around again

[Chorus:]
If I could talk I'd tell you
If I could smile I'd let you know
You are far and away
My most imaginary friend

[Chorus:]
If I could talk I'd tell you
If I could smile I'd let you know
You are far and away
My most imaginary friend

Chris Clark - "From Head To Toe"

Chris Clark was a blonde Los Angeles born singer that managed to get signed to Motown. At 17 she auditioned with the Etta James song "All I could do was cry" and her take was enough for Motown producer Hal Davis to send the acetate to Berry Gordy, which led to a trip to Detroit to sing it live to the Motown boss. At this particular audition Berry Gordy asked to accompany her on keyboards, but was met with her reply of "It is a tricky arrangement and you would find it too difficult." That was met with strange looks from Gordy. He got her to sing the song to all the Motown hierarchy including Lamont Dozier, Brian Holland and Smokey Robinson and each time she declined his help on keyboards. She obviously wasn't aware, at the time, that Berry Gordy had actually written the song. However, he must've taken it well because he signed her up and she was suddenly in a studio with the legendary Holland's and Lamont. In 1966 she took part in the Motown Christmas shows that were held at The Fox Theatre in Detroit. The audience reaction every time they saw her pretty white face, in the build-up film reel, was unpleasant jeering. Stevie Wonder and others had even told her not to go on stage. In the end, Berry Gordy got her to start her routine from behind the stage and by the time she appeared on stage the audience had warmed to her. Her debut album 'Soul Sounds' came out a year later in 1967 but unfortunately had little impact. It was an overlooked gem going by the songs I have heard from it, all those years later. The follow-up album 'CC Rides Again' from 1969 was also neglected. She ended up working in management at Motown and was vice-president of Motown Productions at the time she left and moved to Arizona in 1989.

Beethoven's 5th Symphony (Trilogy)

Part 1, Beethoven
I know I don't need to explain Beethoven or his 5th Symphony. But the video is worth viewing for the cleverness of this sketch, to the music of Beethoven's 5th Symphony, featuring Sid Caesar and Nanette Fabray from the 1950's.

Argument to Beethoven's 5th

Part 2, 70's Disco
Walter Murphy released his single "A Fifth of Beethoven" at the peak of the Disco era in 1976. It was a disco instrumental adaptation of the first movement of Beethoven's 5th Symphony. This was way before the sampling, looping and cut and paste techniques that are now common. So for that reason alone, what he did was groundbreaking and very effective. It was also featured on the 'Saturday Night Fever' soundtrack.

Part 3, 00's R&B
Robin Thicke released "When I Get You Alone" under the name 'Thicke' in 2002 and it became a Top 10 hit in New Zealand and charted well elsewhere, although, it didn't chart at all in the USA. The reason it is on this blog, as part of this trilogy, if you don't know already, is because he sampled Walter Murphy's "A Fifth of Beethoven," practically in full, with his vocal track added over the top. However, he manages to make it his own. Nice to see a song given another life and then that adaptation of the song also given another life.

Still doing the Christmas thing so haven't got regular access to the internet.... so here is a comedy interlude by the great Demetri Martin.

Pop Mechanix - "Jumping out a Window"

Pop Mechanix were a kiwi post-punk band from 1979 through to 1988. Although, upon their move to Australia, they were slapped with a lawsuit over the use of their name by Aussie band 'Popular Mechanics.' They lost and subsequently changed their name to 'NZ Pop' and 'Zoo' shortly after that. They had a couple of hits "Now" and "Jumping out a Window". The latter was their biggest hit and was produced by Split Enz's Eddie Raynor. "Jumping out a Window" is a new wave classic with an explosive chorus. It may sound very much like it's 1981 but, at the same time, it's timeless.

Blonde Redhead & Devestations - "When The Road Runs Out"

'Blonde Redhead' must have increased their fan base with the brilliant album '23' from 2007. It was their seventh, but first self-produced album. They may have been a bit directionless in the studio but the result was stunning. But what was to follow was one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs I have ever heard. They contributed to the Red Hot Organization's compilation album 'Dark Was the Night' in 2009 with "When The Road Runs Out" and what a stunner. It is actually a collaboration with Aussie band 'Devastations' but Blonde Redhead vocalist Kazu Makino gets the full attention from me. Fractured beauty.

M83 - "We Own the Sky"

M83 formed in 2001 as a duo featuring Anthony Gonzalez and Nicolas Fromageau. But after the departure of Fromageau it is now a solo project for Gonzalez, with a few guests. The Frenchman has created a bit of a buzz with the latest album ' Hurry Up, We're Dreaming' released in October. To many people that album may have been the first time they had heard of M83,but five albums were released prior and one of them 'Saturdays = Youth' featured "We Own the Sky" as the fourth single. The album was full of teenage nostalgia, particularly the 80's and "We Own the Sky" captures that feel... but with a modern take. A little bit like 'Air France' and that batch of current electronica acts with a nostalgic slant.

DIRTY BEACHES - "Lord Knows Best"

'Dirty Beaches' is a vehicle for Taiwan born, Canadian based, musician Alex Zhang Hungtai. His soundscapes are dark with a retro feel, which could easily soundtrack the films of Jim Jarmusch or particularly David Lynch's 'Wild at Heart., "Lord Knows Best" is a slow crooning number with delicate piano... but the dark side still dominates with the distortion and low-fi cinematic vibe that is at odds with the delicateness. But, then again, 'Dirty Beaches' are far from conventional.

Lucinda Williams' - "Little Rock Star"

The video posted by someone on youtube (which I have embedded) assumes Kurt Cobain is the inspiration behind "Little Rock Star"
and it seems plausible. However, Lucinda Williams has stated that she got the idea after reading an article about Pete Doherty... and that, kind of, makes more sense. Considering it is about the excessive lifestyle of the upcoming rock star and how easily they throw it all away.... as we have already seen many do. It could also have a personal perspective from her formative years. The album 'Little Honey' was her, so called, happy album... the demons were gone but the album didn't suffer as much as expected because of that. The added bonus on this album was the backing vocals by Susanna Hoffs and Matthew Sweet. Lucinda Williams is fantastic live and she is playing Auckland's town hall again early next year. I won't be missing that one.

Juliana Hatfield Three - "My Sister"

My favourite Juliana Hatfield song would have to be "My Sister" from her album 'Become What You Are' released in 1993. It probably resonated with a lot of young people regarding their relationship with their older sister... from the bitchy moments to being taken to your first rock concert. Still a great sounding radio song now. Gorgeous!

"My Sister" Lyrics

My sister... my sister... my sister.

I hate my sister, she’s such a bit*h.
She acts as if she doesn’t even know that I exist.
But I would do anything to let her know I care.
But I am only talking to myself ’cos she isn’t there.

My sister, I love my sister, she’s the best.
She’s cooler than any other girl that I have ever met.
She had the greatest band, she had the greatest guy.
She’s good at everything and doesn’t even try.

She’s got a wall around her nobody can climb.
She lets her ladder down for those who really shine.
I tried to scale it, but to me she’s blind.
So I lit a firecracker, went off in my eye.

I miss my sister, why’d she go ?
She’s the one who would have taken me
To my first all-ages show.
It was the violent femmes and the del fuegos,
Before they had a record out. before they went gold,
And started to grow.

I miss my sister. I miss my sister.
I miss my sister. I really miss her.

Elk City - "Cherries in the Snow"

Elk City are so underrated I am sure even the most hardened Bitter FM listener would not know the band behind the 'Elk City' songs they hear on the radio. But what a find... this band led by singer Renee LoBue are a secret you may want to keep to yourself. The 2007 album 'New Believers' featured so many great pop moments and "Cherries in the Snow" is one of the more upbeat and catchy numbers that could have taken them to a wider audience... if only anyone had actually heard of them.

New Order - "Perfect Kiss"

I am quite sure all the Bitter FM listeners, and music lovers, would already know everything about the iconic indie band 'New Order' ....so, other than stating the fact that they rose from the ashes of 'Joy Division', let's move on. "Perfect Kiss" displays all the essential New Order attributes... a, Peter Hook's brilliant bass, which he plays like a guitar, more rhythmic and higher up the scale. b, Bernard Sumner's vocal performance is as we would expect.... not great, but their songs are not written for a showman or diva. c, Gillian Gilbert's keyboard playing on this song is sublime... there are so many 'stop work', 'down tools', 'stop listening to the person talking to you' and 'stay stopped when the lights turn green' synth moments in this song. d, Stephen Morris, well you can't fault his percussion programming and keyboard performance here.
I got to see them live in Auckland a couple of times... and both times they made us wait, and then when on stage, they never said a word to the audience. Fucking brilliant! - the last thing we want to hear from rock stars is a false statement about how great we are or how great our country is.

Fran Healy - "As It Comes"

Fran Healy made his name as the main man behind Scottish band 'Travis' and after six albums with Travis, he released his debut solo album 'Wreckorder' in 2010. I know most people would expect another Travis like album and maybe it is. However, when I first heard "As It Comes" it certainly left a lasting impression on me and I never would have guessed it was Fran Healy, or Travis. "As It Comes" is about an old couple in their 80's and the expression of his love to her... but not until it is too late.

"As It Comes" Lyrics

We used to look at each other
But now we look at the past
We used to go out for dinner
And feed the ducks in the park
You say that I could be thinner
I say retract that remark
And I'm loving you each day
As it comes
I'll never let you be lonely
As long as you're by my side
You say you'd leave me if only
Another tear in the eye
Another funeral parlour
I'll have to get a new tie
And I'm loving you each day
As it comes
Time has come
Time has come and gone
And all I've done comes undone
Done
Da-da-done
As I lie here beside you
With Jack Frost in the air
You look like an angel
With that net in your hair
I kiss you so softly
But you're no longer there
Now I'm taking every day
As it comes

PNC - "Slow Motion" ft Jordache and Tom from Homebrew

NZ rap possibly peaked in the mid 2000's and while there are a lot more artists releasing rap music now, there are plenty of wannabes muddying the waters. PNC is definitely not in the wannabe category. He is now three albums into his career and countless guest spots. The new album 'Man on Wire' has a few others guesting, including Jordache and Tom Scott from the great Kiwi hip hop band Homebrew. On "Slow Motion" they are reminiscing about their younger days of drinking too much.... over some excellent hip-hop beats. So grab a Lion Red and sit back and enjoy.

Pete Yorn - "For Nancy ('Cos It Already Is)"

Pete Yorn released his debut album 'musicforthemorningafter' in 2001 and the second of three singles from the album was "For Nancy ('Cos It Already Is)." The album was an impressive debut and it is surprising he hasn't become a huge star on the strength of it. Although, for us, it is probably better he didn't completely cross over to the mainstream. This album is full of songs that could have improved commercial radio if given the chance.... actually, Bitter FM has always benefited from some Pete Yorn on a regular basis. On "For Nancy ('Cos It Already Is)" Pete Yorn has taken the quiet/loud style of The Pixies and Nirvana to a modern rock/pop audience with great results.

Alex Winston - "Sister Wife"

Alex Winston is a Detroit born singer-songwriter with a quirkiness that should keep the mainstream audience away, but at the same time, she could interest the fans of Florence and the Machine. She is a multi-instrumentalist and she plays all the instruments on the "Sister Wife" EP. "Sister Wife" is possibly about bigamy, or, at least, a reference about a partner having an affair... going by the opening chorus line "Hey there sister wife / Get the hell out it's my night / You don't know the way to his heart like I do." The video has a couple of 'Carrie' moments, some flying toilet toast and.... best you just have a look. Quirky pop at it's very best.

Kate Bush/Utah Saints - Cloudbusting/Something Good

"Cloudbusting" was the second single from Kate Bush's 1985 album 'Hounds of Love.' The inspiration for the song came after she had read "A Book of Dreams" a memoir by Peter Reich about his relationship with his father Wilhelm Reich, a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. Wilhelm Reich built cloudbusting machines (or rainmaking machines) made of hollow pipes inserted into water and pointed in the direction of the clouds. The video features Donald sutherland as Wilhelm Reich and covers the cloudbusting period and his arrest by the FBI.

Leeds dance/house music duo 'Utah Saints' released "Something Good" as a single in 1992. The song features a vocal sample from Kate Bush's "Cloudbusting" and that sample "I just know that something good is going to happen" is the basis of the song. A new interpretation that out-charted the original. They even added some bits from the "Cloudbusting" video into their own video. So Kate Bush's inspiration from a memoir resulted in what became the inspiration for a dance music duo.

Broken Bells -"The High Road"

I'm about to move up the road and for that reason I have to spend more time packing and less time on the computer.... so I may be offline for a few days. Here is a great song "The High Road" by the 'Broken Bells' to celebrate the move.

will be back as soon as possible.

Eddie Vedder - "Stuff and Nonsense"

The international success of Split Enz opened the door for New Zealand artists, unfortunately not too many followed. But the remnants of Split Enz were the better for it and built reputations greater than the band in question. Crowded House, The Swingers and Tim Finn solo are a few examples. Split Enz albums always had a stunning Tim Finn ballad and on the 'Frenzy' album he delivered a beautiful piano led classic called "Stuff and Nonsense." In 2001 Neil Finn played a week long season at The St James Theatre in Auckland with guests including his brother Tim, son Liam Finn's band Betchadupa, Johnny Marr, a couple of Radiohead members and Eddie Vedder. I was lucky enough to be there one of the nights and it lived up to all expectations. Eddie Vedder sang "Stuff and Nonsense" with Tim Finn in piano.... it was one of many special moments that night.

CocoRosie - "By your side"

CocoRosie is the musical project for sisters Bianca and Sierra Casady. They were born and raised in America but by the time they recorded their debut album 'La maison de mon rêve' they had met up, after years apart, in Paris. Initially recorded for their circle of friends, it was pursued by 'Touch & Go Records' and they released it in 2004. "By Your Side" combines a lot of their attributes... experimental, classical, broken beats, bird/insect sounds, folk-pop and irony... lots of irony. In fact, it plays like a beautiful and heartfelt love song, however, the more the sentiments of the dutiful housewife are played out, the more the suggestion of irony becomes clear. It all hits home with "I'd wear your black eyes/bake you apple pies." What is likely a song about domestic violence, is a captivating and unique piece of music. Their musical naivety at this early stage of their careers, is a big part of the charm here.

Lyrics to By Your Side :

I'll always be by your side
Even when you're down and out
I'll always be by your side
Even when you're down and out
I just wanted to be your housewife
All i wanted was to be your housewife
I'll iron your clothes
I'll shine your shoes
I'll make your bed
And cook your food
I'll never cheat
I'll be the best girl you'll ever meet
And for a diamond ring
I'll do these kinds of things
I'll scrub your floor
Never be a bore
I'll tuck you in
I do not snore
I'd wear your black eyes
Bake you apple pies
I don't ask why
And i trys not to crys
I'll always be by your side
Even when you're down and out
I'll always be by your side
Even when you're down and out
And its nearly midnight
And all i want with my life
Is to be a housewife
Is to be a housewife
'Cause it's nearly midnight
And all i want with my life
Is to die a housewife
Is to die a housewife

Xerophonics

After the Bicycle Samba song yesterday, which featured music using bicycles, I decided to keep with that theme of unconventional instrumentation. Today we have a band called 'Xerophonics' who released an album of music created by photocopiers. The album is 'Copying Machine Music' and has 13 tracks... all named after the copy machine used. It has much more credibility than someone just recording a copier in their lunch hour or a field recording assignment. The songs created can easily be construed as actual songs and some of the results are quite exceptional. Best filed under ambient industrial rather than dance music.

Bicycle Samba

It may be election day on saturday but here in Taupo there is another big event. The Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge is about to take over our town. The cycle challenge is a 160km ride around the great lake and consistently attracts around 10'000 riders. It also has many other cycle related events on the day and in the week beforehand. So on that note, here is an interesting musical note from the cycles themselves.

Slow Club - "Two Cousins"

Sheffield indie pop/folk band 'Slow Club' recently released their second album 'Paradise' and "Two Cousins" was the first single. Their debut album 'Yeah So' was a young quirky band showing plenty of potential. 'Paradise' is them close to realizing that potential and building on it with much more confidence. This duo featuring Charles Watson and Rebecca Taylor are quickly becoming a Bitter FM favourite and "Two Cousins" is part of the reason why.

Kora - "Politician"

Kora's "Politicion" is an obvious song choice as we are now half way through the final campaign week before our general election on Saturday. The politicians are out there debating, meeting constituents, kissing babies and rolling out the cliches... and this song is a reminder to all the successful candidates about doing the right thing.

Bob Dylan - "Motorpsycho Nitemare"

"Motorpsycho Nitemare" is classic Bob Dylan wit. Released in 1964 on his 'Another Side of Bob Dylan' album it is as close as he got to a parody, in a time of protest songs. The parody here is the Hitchcock movie 'Psycho'. The protagonist is a traveling salesman who finds a farmhouse as a place to spend the night. His plan is not so straightforward when the farmer opens the door with a rifle in hand. He tells the farmer he is a doctor and is allowed to stay on two conditions... he milks the cow in the morning and he stays clear of his daughter Rita. It goes horribly wrong when Rita invites him to shower with her. In the end, to get out of milking the cow and off the farm, he tells the farmer how much he likes Fidel Castro, to which he gets chased off the property by the farmer in a rage. It is a hilarious tale in a style that only Bob Dylan could deliver. The Psycho references are everywhere.... from the "looking like Tony Perkins" line, the offer of a shower with the reply of "been through this movie before" and the mention of being in the swamp without the freedom of speech... the swamp was where Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) dumped the car with the body after the famous shower scene murder. This was early on in a career that went from height to height.

Battleme -"Hey Hey, My My"

A case of channel surfing brought me to this song via the 'Sons of Anarchy' TV series and I had to go to iTunes to buy it instantly.... that is a good example of how convenience has superseded sound quality in the way we purchase music now. In fact, it is a compromise I never expected to accept so quickly. Anyway, back to the song. I have heard the Neil Young original many times and I can't fault that at all. This 'Battleme' version of "Hey Hey, My My" is sparse with low tempo piano but with vocals that lift it to another plateau. Not unlike Neil Young's high pitch singing... but there is an obvious enough difference between the two.

David Lynch - "I Know" (Jon Hopkins remix)

Film legend David Lynch has just released a solo album 'Crazy Clown Time' after releasing two of the songs from it last year as singles. "I Know" was one of those early singles and it got the usual remix treatment that is now common. The remix by Jon Hopkins is the one we play on Bitter FM. "I know" is as dark as Tom Waits' darkest moments, but that isn't a real surprise for any fan of his movies. Although, in saying that, he has been involved in other musical projects that weren't so dark, like his collaboration with Angelo Badalamenti on a couple of Julee Cruise albums... which were more surreal than dark. David Lynch announced a music video competition for the singles and I have included the announcement video along with the winning entry below.

Seelenluft - "Manila" (Headman remix edit)

Seelenluft is the stage name for electronica producer Beat Soler from Switzerland. This (Headman remix) version of "Manila" was on a French compilation album from the early 2000's. The double CD was full of gems and most of them were unknown to me at the time.... but it was "Manila" that always stood out. The vocals are from Michael Smith, a 12 year old boy from Compton, Los Angeles. It is hard to believe this song is nearly 10 years old. A dance classic already.

The Watson Twins - "How Am I To Be"

The Watson Twins are a Los Angeles based Alt-Country/Folk duo. Identical twin sisters Chandra and Leigh Watson first came to my attention in 2006 when they collaborated with Jenny Lewis on 'Rabbit Fur Coat', which was one of my favourite albums of that year. "How Am I To Be" is from their 2008 album 'Fire Songs' and the album was proof that they could be as impressive out front as they were as backing singers. Their strength is obviously vocals and harmonizing and on "How Am I To Be" they play homage to the old soul sound of the 60's, while still keeping true to their alt-country/folk traditions. A little bit on the soft side.... but definitely worth a listen.

Dusty Brown - "This City Is Killing Me"

Dusty Brown are an electronica/drum n' bass trio from Sacramento in California. Consisting of Dusty Brown himself, his sister Jessica Brown and cousin Zac Brown. They released an EP 'This City Is Killing Me' last year and it is full of captivating soundscapes. Main man, Dusty Brown is a producer of great talent and like many other electronica artists played on Bitter FM, there is a definite indie rock under current in his ambient and often unconventional creations. The new EP is available as a free download on their website - www.dustybrown.com - although, you can donate something if you wish. Download it and share it around.

Mëstar - "Konked Out"

Mestar originally formed in Dunedin and are now possibly based in Wellington. The Arch Hill Records band released the album 'Shut The Squizwot Factories Down' in 2006 and it featured an assortment of tales of fantasy and other worlds. Possibly a concept album... I don't know. But if it is, then "Konked Out" may be the part of the tale where the protagonist tires and nearly gives up, only to be persuaded to pursue and it all ends happily. Although, I don't think Mestar's John White writes songs as simple as that. So I'll just say it is a great pop song and leave it at that.

Prototypes - "Gentleman"

Another French band on high rotate at Bitter FM is 'Prototypes' from Paris. Their self-titled album from 2006 was their first international release after signing to Minty Fresh. However, it is a combination of tracks from their two previous French released albums. The song that I can't get enough of is "Gentleman"... for it's sexy French pronunciation, catchy hooks, and even background vocals that are very cool.

Apparat Organ Quartet - "123 Forever"

Don't just start a new band... start a new genre! That is exactly what these Icelandic musicians did. Although the genre of a quartet of organs may be new, their instruments of choice are not new in any way. They use antique, discarded and downright cheap organs and synths... along with the odd farfisa and hammond as well. It's their love of old and salvaged keyboards that helps them create a unique sound. The addition of a drummer actually makes them a five piece... although an organ quartet does make up the balance. "123 Forever" is from their second album 'Pólýfónía.' The robotic vocals recall Kraftwerk but the real drums keep that relationship more distant. Why hadn't anyone thought of this before?

Baths - "Aminals"

'Baths' is the musical name for Will Wiesenfeld. "Aminals" is from his debut album 'Cerulean' released in 2010. If you like your electronica a bit unconventional like I do, then look no further. "Aminals" is like a room full of ideas that have been cut and pasted with such skill... by a classically trained musician, rather than a computer geek.

Johnny Thunders - "You can"t put your arms around a memory"

Johnny Thunders was an original member of 'The New York Dolls' until 1975. He left the New York Dolls to form 'The Heartbreakers' until 1978 when he released his first solo album 'So Alone'. The album featured guests including Chrissie Hynde, Phil Lynott, Steve Marriott, Peter Perrett and a couple of Sex Pistols' Steve Jones and Paul Cook. The album is regarded as his greatest collection of songs and one such song "You can't put your arms around a memory" would have to be his defining moment. His death in 1991 was said to be drug related... but there are many other theories. Another rock n' roll star taken much too soon.

(Lyrics)

It doesn't pay to try,
All the smart boys know why,
It doesn't mean i didn't try,
I just never know why.
Feel so cold and all alone,
Cause baby, you're not at home.
And when i'm home
Big deal, i'm still alone.

Feel so restless, i am,
Beat my head against a pole
Try to knock some sense,
Down in my bones.
And even though they don't show,
The scars aren't so old
And when they go,
They let you know

You can't put your arms around a memory
You can't put your arms around a memory
You can't put your arms around a memory
Don't try, don't try

You're just a bastard kid,
And you got no name
Cause you're living with me,
We're one and the same

And even though they dont show,
They scars aren't so old
And when they go,
They let you know

You can't put your arms around a memory
You can't put your arms around a memory
You can't put your arms around a memory
Don't try, don't try

The Bank Holidays - "Save Silence"

'The Bank Holidays' are a four piece indie pop band from Perth, Australia. "Save Silence" comes from their second album 'Sail Becomes A Kite' released last year. The album is melody and harmony rich and here on "Save Silence" the sweet vocals from Bekk Reczek add to its all-round beauty.

Verlaines - "Slow Sad Love Song"

Someone on youtube commented about the Verlaines being the best band you have never heard of.... which is appropriate, I suppose, for everyone other than a New Zealand Indie rock follower... or a fan of the Flying Nun label. However, for us Verlaines fans, this is a classic Verlaines track. I remember seeing them live years ago and a friend mentioned this song, in the hope they would play it, and I misheard them and argued that there was no fucking way they would play a slow sad love song. Well done... 1 to the Verlaines and 0 to me.

The Wombats - "Bleeding Love" (Leona Lewis Cover)

Can a bunch of drunken indie rock stars turn a mainstream radio hit into a rock-out indie classic? Well, the answer is an obvious yes and here is the proof.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - "Henry Lee"

"Henry Lee" is a traditional folk song with it's origin in Scotland from the 18th century. It became part of American folklorist Francis James Child's traditional folk collection named Child Ballads. The song was originally known as "Young Hunting" but became known as "Henry Lee" and "Love Henry" as well as other names.... which is common for old traditional folk songs as they go through the generations. The song tells the story of Young Hunting (Henry Lee) telling his woman, possibly the mother of his child, that he is in love with another woman and is leaving her. She convinces him to get drunk and stay for one more night before he leaves her. She then stabs him to death and throws his body in a well, with the help from a friend, whom she enlists with a diamond ring. She even gets taunted by a bird in a tree that witnesses the dumping of the body. His body is eventually found and she is later burned at the stake.... classic trad murder ballad, methinks. Dick Justice recorded it in 1929 under the "Henry Lee" name and Nick Cave's version was based lyrically on this. However, musically it is quite different and is more of a Nick Cave composition.... with some slight similarities to the original. PJ Harvey guests and takes the roll of the scorned woman. Nick Cave and PJ Harvey were in a relationship at the time and that is evident in the video.

Dick Justice - "Henry Lee"

Dick Justice version (Lyrics)
"Get down, get down, little Henry Lee, and stay all night with me.
The very best lodging I can afford will be fare better'n thee."
"I can't get down, and I won't get down, and stay all night with thee,
For the girl I have in that merry green land, I love far better'n thee."

She leaned herself against a fence, just for a kiss or two;
With a little pen-knife held in her hand, she plugged him through and through.
"Come all you ladies in the town, a secret for me keep,
With a diamond ring held on my hand I'll never will forsake."

"Some take him by his lily-white hand, some take him by his feet.
We'll throw him in this deep, deep well, more than one hundred feet.
Lie there, lie there, loving Henry Lee, till the flesh drops from your bones.
The girl you have in that merry green land still waits for your return."

"Fly down, fly down, you little bird, and alight on my right knee.
Your cage will be of purest gold, in deed of property."
"I can't fly down, or I won't fly down, and alight on your right knee.
A girl would murder her own true love would kill a little bird like me."

"If I had my bend and bow, my arrow and my string,
I'd pierce a dart so nigh your heart your wobble would be in vain."
"If you had your bend and bow, your arrow and your string,
I'd fly away to the merry green land and tell what I have seen."

Nick Cave version (Lyrics)
Get down, get down, little Henry Lee
And stay all night with me
You won't find a girl in this damn world
That will compare with me
And the wind did howl and the wind did blow
La la la la la
La la la la lee
A little bird lit down on Henry Lee

I can't get down and I won't get down
And stay all night with thee
For the girl I have in that merry green land
I love far better than thee
And the wind did howl and the wind did blow
La la la la la
La la la la lee
A little bird lit down on Henry Lee

She leaned herself against a fence
Just for a kiss or two
And with a little pen-knife held in her hand
She plugged him through and through
And the wind did roar and the wind did moan
La la la la la
La la la la lee
A little bird lit down on Henry Lee

Come take him by his lily-white hands
Come take him by his feet
And throw him in this deep deep well
Which is more than one hundred feet
And the wind did howl and the wind did blow
La la la la la
La la la la lee
A little bird lit down on Henry Lee

Lie there, lie there, little Henry Lee
Till the flesh drops from your bones
For the girl you have in that merry green land
Can wait forever for you to come home
And the wind did howl and the wind did moan
La la la la la
La la la la lee
A little bird lit down on Henry Lee

Rowan Atkinson - "The School Master"

Here is a classic from Rowan Atkinson.... as heard on Bitter FM. I think I first saw this on 'The Secret Policeman's Ball' movie quite a few years ago. Timeless.

Nirvana/Little Roy - "Lithium"

Not too much more needs to be said about Nirvana and their groundbreaking album 'Nevermind'... except that it has recently celebrated it's 20th anniversary. "Lithium" was one of the standout tracks and is worth a revisit.

Little Roy is a Jamaican reggae artist who started out in the late 60's. He recently released an album of reggae versions of Nirvana songs 'Battle for Seattle.' "Lithium" is an example of how successful he was. Although, a complete album may be a bit too much.

Lana Del Rey - "Video Games" (live on Jools Holland, Oct.11, 2011)

This is the first (and probably last) time I will post a song twice on this blog. But after finding out Lana Del Rey appeared on the legendary 'Later with Jools Holland' show, I wanted to share it. This is evidence to me that she is the real deal.... and I'm still obsessed with this song anyway. I have never known of a new artist where the fans and critics are so divided. The people, like myself, who have been taken in with the beautiful sultry vocals and sensational song structure and songwriting, have been blown away. However, the abhorrence directed towards her by her critics, because of her looks, and whatever else, is a bit extreme to say the least. I admit, I feel that way about some manufactured artists... but my angle is usually from the musical point of view, and musically, I can only be positive about Lana Del Rey thus far.

Skrillex - "First Of The Year (Equinox)"

Skrillex is the musical name for Los Angeles Electro/Dubstep artist and producer Sonny Moore. "First Of The Year (Equinox)" is the first single from his third EP 'More Monsters and Sprites' which also features remixes of the title track to his previous EP "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites." The emphatic utterance of "Call 911 now" at the peak of song is actually sampled from a youtube video of a distressed woman yelling it out in response to skaters photographing or something like that. This song would impress the indie rock crowd as much as the Dubstep/electro-house crowd, and for that reason, I'm surprised it wasn't more successful. Although, the video was definitely successful. Anyone who has seen the movie 'Hard Candy' would be just as impressed with this tale of a predator picking the wrong prey. If you haven't seen the video yet... you are in for a treat. 12 million viewers can't be wrong.

The screaming lady "Call 911 now"....25 seconds in.

True Lovers - "Death Threat"

Auckland musicians Dion Lunadon (The D4) and Ben Maitland (Box Car Guitars) ran into each other and planned to start up a band on a few occasions and one of them was when they found out they were both moving to Los Angeles. However, that fell through and it wasn't until Dion Lunadon moved to New York and convinced Ben Maitland to join him, when they finally got a band going. 'True Lovers' was what they called the band and it wasn't long before they recorded their debut self titled album. The first single from the debut was "Death Threat" and it's a garage rock stomper. A bit like the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion... but with Kiwi accents. Better than cool.

The Only Ones - "Another Girl Another Planet"

"Another Girl Another Planet" was the biggest hit for English punk/new wave band 'The Only Ones'. It came from the self titled debut album released in 1978 and its highest chart placing was actually in New Zealand at #44 and only in the top 50 for a week. So this so-called one hit wonder for 'The Only Ones' didn't even qualify for that title because it wasn't a hit at all. But the question remains... why the fuck not? It has to be one of the greatest punk/rock songs of all time. The intro slowly gets consumed by the most amazing guitar solo, and once Peter Perrett starts singing, it is clear we are hearing something quite special. Like 'The Stranglers', 'The Only Ones' probably found themselves in the punk/new wave scene by accident or by association... but The Only Ones ended up providing one of the genre's greatest moments. An undeniable classic!

Okay, this the last 'All Blacks' related song post. A great version of a great Rolling Stones song to go into the Rugby World Cup final with.

Mr. Little Jeans -"Rescue Song" (RAC Remix)

Mr. Little Jeans is the stage name for Norwegian artist Monica Birkenes. The name comes from a character in the film 'Rushmore,' which was a source of inspiration. She is now in Los Angeles recording her debut album. The little material she has released so far has been remixed by many artists including The Naked and Famous, Passion Pit and RAC. "Rescue Song" (RAC Remix) is the perfect pop song/dance club hybrid. She has also recorded an interesting cover of Arcade Fire's "The Suburbs"... so if you are a Bitter FM listener, you are definitely going to hear more from Mr.Little Jeans.

Saint Privat - 1,2,3... (Un, Deux, Trois)

We are not far away from the Rugby World Cup final between New Zealand and France on Sunday night. So to get into the spirit of the final here is an appropriate song from French band 'Saint Privat'... I say appropriate as in New Zealand 'Un' and France 'Deux' hopefully. Some say France don't deserve to be there but that is ridiculous because they won the games at the knockout stage and the others didn't, regardless of their style of play. So well done France... but obviously I am hoping for a New Zealand victory.

Mogwai - "Get To France"

Glasgow indie/instrumental rockers Mogwai have just released an EP 'Earth Division' and "Get To France" is the leading track. I'm sorry but I will have to use the 'melancholy' word for this song, once again. However, this time it hasn't got anything to do with the lyrics... because there aren't any, it's all in the mood of the instrumentation. My definition of this song is 'Indie rock meets classical music for a soundtrack to whatever you are doing.... as long as you are not too happy doing what you are doing. The best thing about Mogwai is their ability to surprise. And this is a pleasant surprise.

Elizabeth Harper - "Trouble In The Palace"

Elizabeth Harper is the lead singer for New York band 'Class Actress' and has also released a self titled solo album, and that is where you will find this song "Trouble In The Palace." She is a singer-songwriter of substance... here is an' artist with dark and melancholy lyrics but she sounds so uplifting and sweet. "Trouble In The Palace" recalls everything from 80's 'Smiths' and 'Sundays' to the current indie-folk it-girls... with some 60's charm thrown in. Take whatever you like from her sound, but one thing is for sure, you will be mesmerized.

Radiohead feat. Sparklehorse - "Wish You Were Here"

Sparklehorse toured with Radiohead in 1996 and they collaborated in 1998 with a cover of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here", which sadly, to me, is now a tribute to Sparklehorse's Mark Linkous, who took his own life last year. It took me a while to listen to any Sparklehorse music after the death of Mark Linkous. But maybe the time is right for a fitting tribute.

Ruby Frost - "Odyssey"

Auckland singer-songwriter Ruby Frost (born Jane de Jong) is one to watch out for in the future. She is not only a great songwriter and vocalist, she also has a unique D.I.Y fashion sense.... with capes, sequined or glitter painted outfits to go with her stage presence. She had an interesting childhood with her parents founding the Parachute music label as well as being members of the Parachute band.... which meant a lot of traveling, along with her brother, around the world when her parents toured. As she got older she realized her musical direction was not necessarily in line with what the Parachute label was about, her taste was more Karen O, Joanna Newsom and Bjork, so she decided to do it alone and the result was signing with Universal NZ eventually. She is recording her debut album (after already releasing a couple of EPs) with Chris Zane (Passion Pit, The Walkmen) producing. "Odyssey" is a recent single that has been getting a lot of airplay on Bitter FM. It is a slice of cosmic synth-pop combined with a folkiness, possibly, inspired by her idols.

The Strange Boys - "Be Brave"

The Strange Boys are a Texas garage rock band. "Be Brave" is the title track to their second album and it's a barnstorming catchy sing-along song... like a 60's garage classic from a British invasion band, rather than an Austin band from 2010. They even get away with the addition of some clever saxophone. Impure and simple!

Split Enz - "Six Months In A Leaky Boat"

We have a container ship 'Rena' stuck on the Astrolabe reef off the coast of Tauranga. It is now New Zealand's worst maritime oil spill and it is going to get a lot worse before it gets better. Total disaster! Let's hope it's not there for six months.... but it sure is a leaky boat.

Godley and Creme/Gayngs - "Cry"

Godley and Creme released this single in 1985 and it became their biggest hit. A lot of it's success could be contributed to the groundbreaking video, which used a technology called analog cross-fading, or face morphing. Kevin Godley and Lol Creme had been directing videos since the days of their former band '10cc' and this video for their new musical partnership set them up for a successful career as innovative and creative video directors.... They directed famous videos for The Police, Duran Duran, Frankie Goes to Hollywood and many more during the 80's.

Gayngs - "Cry"
Midwest American Indie band 'Gayngs' recorded a cover of "Cry" for their 2010 album 'Relayted'... as if that wasn't enough, they also covered the video... complete with a Kevin Godley cameo.

Haunted Love - "Librarian"

Dunedin band 'Haunted Love' have just released their album 'Spirit Revival' which should be worthy of your hard earned cash. However, today's post is about an earlier song they released called "Librarian"... a twee and wonderful ode to the librarian. With a video that could be subtitled "The revenge of the Librarians." Check it out here, but remember the library etiquette... shhhh.

Kraftwerk - "Telephone Call"

With the recent passing of Apple's Steve Jobs... the man behind the iPhone, I thought a song about telephones may be an appropriate sign of respect. As we know, telephones have changed so much in recent years, and listening to Kraftwerk's "Telephone Call" now, it does sound a bit dated... but only because of the technology changes, not the music itself. This was a good example of how Kraftwerk were way ahead of the pack in music technology. A 2011 version would be very interesting.

Colin Stetson - "Judges"

Montreal based saxophone player Colin Stetson has toured with Arcade Fire on a regular basis and has performed and/or recorded with many others including Feist, TV on the Radio, Tom Waits, The National, Bon Iver, LCD Soundsystem and Laurie Anderson to name only a few. He has released two solo albums 'New History Warfare Vol. 1' (2008) and 'New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges' (2011) and the song "Judges" from Volume 2 has been getting airtime on Bitter FM lately. You will not believe the sound he creates from a saxophone. Incredible!

Candie Payne - "All I Need To Hear"

Candie Payne is a singer/songwriter from Liverpool with a penchant for the 60's girl group era. In fact, I would say the single "All I Need To Hear" is as close to Dusty Springfield you could get... other than playing a Dusty Springfield record. It is from her debut album 'I Wish I Could Have Loved You More' released in 2007, which was cruelly overlooked. At a time when Amy Winehouse and Sharon Jones and the Dap kings were bringing back the 60's soul music in style, somehow Candie Payne was ignored. So perfect... this is "All I Need To Hear."

NEWMATICS - "Riot Squad"

With the Rugby World Cup 2011 at the knockout stage, it seemed appropriate to have a song with a rugby connection. In 1981 the South African 'Springbok' rugby team toured New Zealand. It influenced violent protests throughout the country for the duration of the tour. South Africa's apartheid policy was isolating them on the world stage and sporting contact was discouraged throughout the world. The newly elected National government had a strong stance against politics in sport and decided to allow the New Zealand Rugby Union to proceed with the tour. The protest movement grew in momentum and the country was suddenly divided in two. There were those who strongly opposed apartheid and could not accept any association with South Africa, particularly in their country... and there were others that didn't agree with politics getting in the way of sport, regardless of their opinion on apartheid. Because of the strength of the protest movement, the police had formed two riot squads and they became the face of the police during the tour.
Sometime in 1980 there was a police raid at the popular Auckland rock/punk venue XS Cafe (although, it wasn't highly publicised) where ska/post punk band 'The Newmatics' were playing. They later released a single "Riot Squad" about that incident in 1981. However, history changed all of that during the Springbok tour and it suddenly found itself as the anthem for the protest movement... and I am sure The Newmatics and Simon Grigg of Propeller Records didn't mind one bit. "Riot Squad" is a great slice of New Zealand history.... and musically, it stands up well today.

Temple of the Dog - "Hunger Strike"

'Temple of the Dog' were a grunge supergroup from Seattle featuring Chris Cornell (of Soundgarden), Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament (both ex-members of Mother Love Bone and Pearl Jam thereafter), Mike McCready (a friend of Stone Gossard at the time, and Pearl Jam lead guitarist thereafter), drummer Matt Cameron (he also became a member of Pearl Jam) and Eddie Vedder (Lead singer of Pearl Jam, of course). Although, this was before most of them had become so well known.
'Temple of the Dog' originally started as a tribute to Chris Cornell's friend Andrew Wood, the lead singer of Mother Love Bone, who died of an overdose. The idea was to release a tribute single with the other members of 'Mother Love Bone' and it grew to a self titled album released in 1991. "Hunger Strike," a duet between Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder became the biggest hit, and the best known song from the album. Eddie Vedder had gone to Seattle from San Diego for an audition as the singer of Mookie Blaylock (which eventually became Pearl Jam) and he was in the studio at the time of the recording.
Here is how Chris Cornell remembers it (Thanks to the Spin Magazine article 'Ten Past Ten' from 2001, by Eric Weisbard with Jessica Letkemann, Ann Powers, Chris Norris, William Van Meter, and Will Hermes.....
"I had pulled out "Hunger Strike" and I had this feeling it was just kind of gonna be filler, it didn't feel like a real song. Eddie was sitting there kind of waiting for a [Mookie Blaylock] rehearsal and I was singing parts, and he kind of humbly—but with some balls—walked up to the mic and started singing the low parts for me because he saw it was kind of hard. We got through a couple choruses of him doing that and suddenly the light bulb came on in my head, this guy's voice is amazing for these low parts. History wrote itself after that, that became the single."

Unknown Mortal Orchestra - "Ffunny Ffrends"

Unknown Mortal Orchestra are a band from Portland and have recently released their self titled debut album on Fat Possum records. "Ffunny Ffrends" is a single from the album.

<<<<< rewind a few years...

Auckland band 'The Mint Chicks' win five awards in New Zealand for the album 'Crazy? Yes! Dumb? No!' in 2007. They relocate to Porland in the USA. They release their third studio album 'Screens' in 2009. They release the 'Bad Buzz EP' in 2010. Their final concert was a chaotic affair... Singer Kody Nielson attacks his brother Ruban Nielson (guitarist) and also dismantles the drums, before storming off the stage. The Mint Chicks are no more. Kody joins Bic Runga as Kody & Bic in NZ. Ruban starts up 'Unknown Mortal Orchestra' back in Portland. 'Unknown Mortal Orchestra' release debut album in June.

>>>>> fast forward to present....

Now where was I, oh yeah, the single "Ffunny Ffrends"....which is Ffucking Ffantastic!

George Smilovici - "I'm Tuff" (1984)

Australian comedian George Smilovici had a number one hit in Australia and New Zealand with this single "I'm Tuff" in 1984. It was a great achievement for a comedy single to chart, but to hit the top of the charts, was something else. The video is the only thing here that seems a bit dated.... the comedy itself is timeless. I only have this on vinyl and it's a bit scratched to convert to digital... so the only time it gets played on air is a late night drunken live vinyl show... which is appropriate really.

REDTRACK - "Perfectly Fine Intellectual"

My first thought after hearing "Perfectly Fine Intellectual" by Redtrack was how much they reminded me of The Buzzcocks. They had the same thrash punk/new wave attitude... a young 2010 version, with a little Libertines and Arctic Monkeys thrown in. So it was no real surprise to find out that Pete Shelley from The Buzzcocks had produced the single "Pole Dancer" from their debut album 'Whole Town's Heart.' "Perfectly Fine Intellectual," another single from the debut, is a pulse-racing, lift-me-up indie/punk song that could save you buying another coffee. Aural caffeine!

The Fall - "Kurious Oranj"

In 1988 The Fall released an album titled 'I Am Kurious Oranj,' which came during a high period of their career, after previously releasing 'This Nation's Saving Grace' (1985), 'Bend Sinister' (1986) and 'The Frenz Experiment' (1988). But this album was an unlikely foray into ballet. No Mark E Smith and co didn't change careers, but they did provide the music to Michael Clark's ballet 'I Am Curious Orange.' It was more like a 'Fall' album than a soundtrack.... I would say it was more of a concept album. However, it was also performed live with the ballet at the time. The ballet was based on the 300th anniversary of William Of Orange's ascendancy to the English throne. I don't know too much about the ballet... but getting The Fall to write the music for it was a win/win scenario. Michael Clark got the perfect musical soundtrack and we got a fantastic album, once again, from The Fall.... regardless of any knowledge of the ballet.

Lana Del Rey - "Video Games"

Lana Del Rey is going to be a star... that much is true. It is the level of stardom that isn't so clear. If she stays indie-cool and self produces her music and videos, she will build on the buzz she has already created. If she goes with a major label and the corporate marketing machine gets behind her, she will be a huge star, but her credibility will be lost and she will end up no different to all the others... talent aside. She has already released an EP under her real name Lizzy Grant but has deleted it from all download stores. Her focus is obviously on her new Lana Del Rey persona and she has created a youtube buzz with her songs "Video Games" and "Blue Jeans," which will be released in October. The videos were produced by her... so no matter what is going on behind the scenes, she is currently quite independent. She is also creating more of a buzz by way of her mysteriousness... a long delay for the release of her first single (the aforementioned "Video Games" w/ "Blue Jeans"), the postponement of her first concert, which sold out in minutes, and her lack of media interviews (Pitchfork is about the only interview to date, with selective questions answered). She looks like a Hollywood star and that is the main area of her criticism on blogs etc. Okay, how about her music? "Video Games" is a retro, melancholy song with sparse orchestration (guitar, piano and strings), yet powerful vocals... as in low and sultry. Think, a young jazz singer from Lake Placid walking on to a 50's/60's movie set, with David Lynch directing, and you are close. You may need to open a window or two after listening to this. Yes, this song is my latest obsession. Pre-order this on iTunes, you will not regret it.

(Lyrics)
Swinging in the backyard
Pull up in your fast car
Whistling my name

Open up a beer
And you take it over here
And play a video game

I'm in his favorite sun dress
Watching me get undressed
Take that body downtown

I say you the bestest
Lean in for a big kiss
Put his favorite perfume on

Go play a video game

It's you, it's you, it's all for you
Everything I do
I tell you all the time
Heaven is a place on earth with you
Tell me all the things you want to do
I heard that you like the bad girls
Honey, is that true?
It's better than I ever even knew
They say that the world was built for two
Only worth living if somebody is loving you
Baby now you do

Singing in the old bars
Swinging with the old stars
Living for the fame

Kissing in the blue dark
Playing pool and wild darts
Video games

He holds me in his big arms
Drunk and I am seeing stars
This is all I think of

Watching all our friends fall
In and out of Old Paul's
This is my idea of fun
Playing video games

It's you, it's you, it's all for you
Everything I do
I tell you all the time
Heaven is a place on earth with you
Tell me all the things you want to do
I heard that you like the bad girls
Honey, is that true?
It's better than I ever even knew
They say that the world was built for two
Only worth living if somebody is loving you
Baby now you do

(Now you do)

It's you, it's you, it's all for you
Everything I do
I tell you all the time
Heaven is a place on earth with you
Tell me all the things you want to do
I heard that you like the bad girls
Honey, is that true?
It's better than I ever even knew
They say that the world was built for two
Only worth living if somebody is loving you
Baby now you do

The Deer Tracks - "Fra Ro Raa / Ro Ra Fraa"

I don't know what is in the water (or vodka) in Sweden... but how do they produce interesting musical acts on such a regular basis? My latest favourite Swedish band, from a growing list, is 'The Deer Tracks.' A folk-electronica duo featuring David Lehnberg & Elin Lindfors. The musical soundscapes they create are sensational... from toy instruments to thumping techno beats... but otherwise, vocal-rich electronica at its hauntingly best. "Fra Ro Raa / Ro Ra Fraa" is from their latest album 'The Archer Trilogy Part 2' released just recently. Enchanting.

Washed Out/Widowspeak - "Wicked Game" (Chris Isaak Cover)

Washed Out - "Wicked Game"

A couple of indie bands each recorded a cover version of Chris Isaac's "Wicked Game"... for whatever reason. Chillwave artist 'Washed Out' very recently performed "Wicked Game" at a Sirius XMU Session. 'Washed Out' is a solo project for Georgian (State) artist Ernest Greene. On this great rendition of the Chris Isaac classic he is joined on vocals by his wife Blair.

Widowspeak - "Wicked Game"

Widowspeak are a New York trio with a 'Mazzy Star' presence... particularly through the vocal style of Molly Hamilton. They released their version of "Wicked Game" as a b-side to the "Gun Shy" single a few months ago. Molly Hamilton said she was watching the movie 'Wild at Heart' and after hearing the original version, she said "I wish I had written that song"... well Molly, you may not have written it, but you made it your own here. Sensational.

Harry Chapin - "W*O*L*D"

Harry Chapin's music may easily be thought of as AM radio fodder but he was a proficient story teller through song.... as we know with his big hit "Cat's in the Cradle." He started his musical career in the mid 60's while playing with his two brothers. In 1981, at the age of 38, he met his untimely death in a car accident. "W*O*L*D" was a hit single in 1974 from his album 'Short Stories.' It is about a radio DJ looking back at his career.. the highs of morning radio to the lows of night time talk shows around the country. The story is told through a phone call to his ex-wife and he reveals his sadness of the failed marriage as well as the despair of aging in an industry he loved.... all of this while trying to convince her, if not himself, how happy he was. A poignant tale of despair.

Lyrics

Hello Honey, it's me
What did you think when you heard me back on the radio?
What did the kids say when they knew it was their long lost daddy-o?
Remember how we listened to the radio
And I said `That's the place for me'
And how I got the job as an FM Jock the day you married me?
We were two kids and I was was into AM rock
But I just had to run around
It's been eight years since I left you babe
Let me tell you 'bout what's gone down
CHORUS
I am the morning DJ on W*O*L*D
Playing all the hits for you wherever you may be
The bright good-morning voice who's heard but never seen
Feeling all of forty-five going on fifteen
The drinking I did on my last big gig made my voice go low
They said that they liked the younger sound when they let me go
So I drifted on down to Tulsa, Oklahoma to do me a late night talk show
Now I worked my way back home again, via Boise, Idhao
That's how this business goes
CHORUS
I've been making extra money playing high school sock hops
I'm a big time guest MC
You should hear me talking to the little children
And listen what they say to me
Got a spot on the top of my head, begging for a new toupee
And a tire on my gut from sitting on my
But they're never gonna go away
Sometimes I get this crazy dream
That I just drive off in my car
But you can travel on ten thousand miles and still stay where you are
I've been thinking that I should quit disk jockeying
And start that record store
Maybe I could settle down if you'ld take me back once more
OK Honey, I see
I guess he's better than me
Sure, Old Girl, I understand
You don't have to worry, I'm such a happy man
W*O*L*D, W*O*L*D, W*O*L, W*O*L, W*O*L*D*D*D
I am the morning DJ on K*H*J
Playing all the hits for you Playing them night and day
The bright good morning voice who's heard but never seen
Feeling all of forty-five, going on fifteen
I am the morning DJ on W*O*L*D

Girl In A Coma - "BB"

Texas band 'Girl In A Coma' won me over with this song "BB" and also 'The Smiths' song reference "Girlfriend in a Coma" for their band name. They even supported Morrissey for part of his 2007 American tour. I a way, they are an enigma... here we have three Mexican/American girls, hugely influenced by The Smiths, signed to Joan Jett's Blackheart Records label. Though their Smiths influence comes through at times, their roots, and the Joan Jett connection often come through as well. A band to watch out for.

The Sing Songs - "Pamphlet Baby"

'The Sing Songs' are a Wellington twee/indie-pop band. No that's not quite right, how about, TWEE/indie-pop band... that's much better. "Pamphlet Baby" is a story about a young lady losing her baby and subsequently delivering pamphlets in the pram. How the hell could something like that sound so twee, you ask? Well take a listen... and enjoy the piss-take of a video.

The Robba - "Say Goodnight"

The Robba is an independent producer/singer-songwriter/rap MC from Auckland. He is the ultimate DIY music producer... everything from the instrumentation and vocals to the beats and video production. He already has a couple of self-released albums behind him and a van load of music videos on youtube. I've been playing The Robba music ever since he first sent some to the station. This song "Say Goodnight" being the most played, just ahead of "Bling King." The Robba often gives away his music at www.therobba.com and if you like what you hear, I suggest you buy some more... fair deal, I say.

R.E.M. - "Wall of Death"

R.E.M. released this Richard Thompson cover on the tribute album 'Beat the Retreat: Songs by Richard Thompson' in 1994. I will admit that I heard this cover before I ever heard the original, which is surprising because the original comes from his most critically acclaimed album 'Shoot Out the Lights' from 1982, which was a 'Richard and Linda Thompson' release... as a duo with his wife. Some people say it doesn't get close to the original, but if you take away prejudices and emotion, this is a fantastic recording regardless of its origins. R.E.M. had just released 'Automatic For the People' a couple of years earlier and 'Monster' the same year... so they recorded this, possibly, at their peak, and to me, it shows. Brilliant!

Babybird - "Bad Old Man"

Sheffield band 'Babybird' had a worldwide hit with the radio friendly "You're gorgeous" in 1996. What the world didn't expect was this song "Bad old man" a couple of years later. It was on the album "There's Something Going On" which was much darker than their previous album 'Ugly Beautiful.' The lyrics to "Bad Old Man" are unsettling and paint a picture of a Jerry Springer type b-list celebrity with psychotic violent behavior. But set to such beautiful baroque-pop music... it shouldn't work at all. But it does work. In fact, it's a work of genius.

David O'Doherty - "My Beefs" 2011

David O'Doherty is an Irish comedian with a comedy act that is backed by a miniature electric keyboard that he plays on stage. He lets out his inner 'Grumpy Old Man' frustrations, or beefs, every year in a perpetually updated version of his song "My Beefs."
Here is "My Beefs 2011" and do search out his beefs from previous years.

The Subliminals - Uh-oh!

The Subliminals were a Flying Nun band from the late 90's to early 00's, with an obvious nod to the Flying Nun bands of the 80's. While the Flying Nun label was still signing some new acts at the time, The Subliminals were probably the only one that truly reflected the label's past... and they were actually from Auckland, rather than the deep south of the early Flying Nun bands. Their debut album 'United State' was released in 2000. 'United State' was a powerful and solid album for all fans of New Zealand Alt-Rock. I would've loved a follow-up album... but that wasn't to be. Search out this album and I can guarantee that you won't be disappointed.

Moloko - "The Time Is Now"

Music rules... and this blog is all about great music. However, I will digress today because here in New Zealand we love a game called rugby and we are on the eve of hosting the Rugby World Cup 2011. Tomorrow it all kicks off and I am quite excited about it. It's been a long time coming... finding a song to celebrate that was quite easy, actually. I could get all sentimental and have an over emotional Saatchi and Saatchi moment.... or I could have the song that captures the moment perfectly... and that is "The Time Is Now" by Moloko.

British Sea Power - "Waving Flags"

'British Sea Power' are possibly the most underrated band in the UK. The Brighton based band formed in 2000 and have five albums behind them. Their third album 'Do You Like Rock Music?' may have had them in a quandary, do they go the Coldplay' or 'Snow Patrol' way, or continue down the 'Arcade Fire' route... luckily, they chose the latter and released a stunning album. I'm not actually saying that the thought of being another 'Coldplay' even entered their minds, however, the point I was making was that they could've pulled it off, had they turned down the guitars and up the charm and/or were signed to a major label. 'Do You Like Rock Music?' was a maritime themed album with a single "Waving Flags" that got a lot of radio play on Bitter FM. In fact, it may now be getting a lot more airplay because I think I will make it the 'unofficial' Bitter FM Rugby World Cup song.... well, nothing on Bitter FM is ever 'official.'

Rugby World Cup 2011 New Zealand... we are ready - we are excited.

Rugby isn't complete without a Haka.

The Sounds - "Painted By Numbers"

The Sounds are a Swedish band with a Blondie swagger and a Post-Punk/Dance-Rock sound. "Painted by Numbers" is from their second album 'Dying to Say This to You' from 2006. It definitely recreates an 80's synth-pop scene, but add the guitar hooks and also the lively vocals from Maja Ivarsson, and you have a modern classic.

The Bambi Molesters - "As the Dark Wave Swells"

This has been a favourite on Bitter FM for a while now. However, I didn't know much about the band themselves until now. I did know they are (obviously) a surf-rock band. I didn't know that 'As the Dark Wave Swells' was their eighth album. I did know that the title track is one of the coolest surf-rock instrumentals I've heard in a long time.

Simon Comber - "New Day" interactive music video demo

Simon Comber is an Auckland based singer/songwriter with a couple of albums under his belt. He has just released an EP 'The Right To Talk To Strangers' and is touring the country to promote it. The good news for us is that he has added Taupo to the tour itinerary. The new EP is a great set of songs with "New Day" leading the way. The song "New Day" has an interactive iPhone/iPad App video that can be downloaded for free at iTunes. It allows you to change the course of the video by rotating the iphone. Very cool indeed, but that shouldn't take away the strength of the song itself.

Girls -"Vomit"

After last year's impressive 'Broken Dreams Club' EP, which included the Bitter FM summer hit "Heartbreaker," and showed some maturity in their songwriting.... what I didn't expect was what was to follow that EP. The first single "Vomit" from their forthcoming album 'Father, Son, Holy Ghost' is nearly seven minutes of psych-rock with some Pink Floyd touches and even some gospel backing. Epic would be an understatement.

MNDR - "I Go Away"

MNDR is yet another electropop duo from New York. Amanda Warner and Peter Wade are the usual story of singer meets producer guy and then they start a band. The difference to some of the others is the fact that the singer here can sing and write great songs. Their four track EP called 'E.P,E.' could be described as "Santigold goes retro" or maybe just as "MNDR doing what they do and sounding fucking cool." That will do... I've got nothing else.

Bon Iver - "Calgary"

I didn't believe the hype about Bon Iver at the time of the release of their debut album " For Emma, Forever Ago" in 2007. I heard all the stories about the leading member Justin Vernon holing up in a cabin over winter, where he wrote most of the songs. I also heard the stories of his relationship and former band breakup. I also heard about his bout with mononucleosis... all of this before any music, I must add. And then I heard "Skinny Love" and everything changed... I was wrong. The stories suddenly became interesting. The self titled second album is out now and it is certainly more expansive than the debut but still has the unmistakable Bon Iver falsetto and harmonies. The first single "Calgary" reflects all of that.
